This fascinating and informative map is a representation of the geological and Paleontological facets of the British Isles. This map, in two sheets, uses color lithgoraphy to describe the specific fossils that can be located in various regions. The map is surrounded by an inset of the Shetland Islands, tables, notes, and scientific illustrations of various fossils to complete the design. Wonderful illustrations include Palaeozoic fishes, an Irish elk and secondary reptiles. From the seminal 'Physical Atlas of Natural Phenomena'. Johnston's classic symmetrical border design employed. Alexander Keith Johnston (1804-1871) was a Scottish geographer and Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society. Partnered with his brother William, Johnston maintained a prolific map publishing firm throughout the 19th century. Their output ranged from globes to atlases and wall maps.
