First edition, second state (imprint below engraved title). Small octavo (6 1/2 x 4 1/8 inches; 165 x 105 mm). [viii], 175, [1, colophon] pp. With the second state additional engraved title and with frontispiece after Daniel Maclise, by F.P. Becker. Eleven in-text black and white illustrations after Doyle, Leech, and Stanfield. With the publisher's advertisement leaf for the tenth edition Christmas Carol bound at the front.
Publisher's vertically ribbed red cloth. Covers stamped with blind-stamped borders and gilt vignette to front board. Spine with gilt vignette and lettering. Pale yellow endpapers. All edges gilt. Spine slightly browned with minor wear and repairs to spine head and tail, and some chipping and cracking to cloth along hinges. Cloth with a small amount of soiling. Corners slightly bumped. Hinges cracked but firm. Previous owner's neat inscription on front free endpaper. Overall, very good.
"Although the title-page is postdated 1845, "The Chimes" was published on December 16th, 1844." (Smith)
