by Edwards, Sutherland
London: Remington & Co., publishers, 1885. First edition, 8vo, pp. [6], 295, [1], 16 (John Grant catalog); color folding map; original pictorial green cloth stamped in gilt and black; endpapers renewed, binding a little soiled; all else very good, sound, and clean. Ownership signature on flyleaf of William Galbraith, likely Sir William Galbraith (1837-1906) the British Army officer who served as Adjutant-General of India. Edwards (1828-1906) was a British journalist and music critic. Much of the material here has been synthesized from articles, "published from time to time in newspapers, magazines, and reviews during the last eight or nine years. These articles were all written with one object; that of showing that Russian expeditions in Central Asia (supported at critical moments by Russian intriguers in Persia and Afghanistan) have always been undertaken, not with a view to an improved frontier, the Russian frontier on the Central Asian side having never been threatened; nor for commercial purposes, the exports and imports between Russia and the Khanates being of the most trifling value, and quite out of proportion with the cost of occupying and administering the Russian possessions in Central Asia: but simply in order to place Russia in a position to threaten and, on a fitting opportunity, attack India" (preface).
