This work is regarded Abbey's most famous and influential novel, that follows the deeds and adventures of Doc, Hayduke, Bonnie, and Seldom Seen, as they protest the industrialization and destruction of the southwest through means of sabotage and "monkeywrenching." Because of this work, the term 'monkeywrench' has come to mean, besides sabotage and damage to machines, any sabotage, activism, lawmaking, or lawbreaking to preserve wilderness, wild spaces and ecosystems. Edward Abbey (1927-1989) was a celebrated author, essayist, conservationist, noted pain-in-the-ass, and in many ways the father (or at the very least, uncle) of the modern environmental movements.
