first edition Card
1906
1906. Card . Very good. Eighty-eight postcards, postmarked from 1906-1913, all addressed to M. J. [Maurice Jenne] Heerlein, Esq. 1507 S Tenth Street St. Joseph Missouri. Each featuring an original, rather fleshed out illustration, signed "Bill". With a detailed hand and playful, sharp wit, the author and artist depicts family, townspeople and characters in the senders life as well as stereotypes of the time, primarily Native Americans, cowboys and "western' life as well as references to the post office, Sugar Lake and 'Sterling Splits". (Recipient Heerlein was the owner of Sterling Pickling Works, manufacturers of pickles, vinegars and sauerkraut.) The artist's social and cultural commentary are represented through caricatures, text and punny slogans.
