"Veilings" is an exceptional and scarce salesman's sample book with 198 different examples of veil textiles from post-World War 2, New York. Each leaf contains a veil swatch with an inventory number and in some cases a note with the optional colors. The veil samples are mounted on very thin blue paper - some have add'l colors offered. Thick elephantine measuring 10 1/4" wide x 19 1/2" long and 4 1/4" deep. Some are attached with staples and others with sticker adhesives. One of the leaves contains a fabric swatch with multiple color fabric samples. The album features simple lace designs in black to complex patterns including pillow dots, butterfly shapes, flowers, and geometric designs. The salesman or counter person would let customers browse through the patterns and have custom veils added to hats or other accessories. A designer as such would work with a millinery. David Dubin, Inc. listed business as 65 W. 39th Street, New York. He opened his business in 1945. Inside the salesman's binder is a torn bottom piece of salesman's date book - which has the date: Friday, Oct. 1, 1948. An excellent example of trade and fashion industry in New York City in the post-War. It was quite the style to wear a pill-box hat with a veil for outings as church or formal occasions. Think Jackie O style. "Swatch Books were used (and are still used) by salespeople to quickly showcase the fabric and style choices available to a consumer. Material culture always being highly competitive, the design styles in some of the very best sample books from the great textile houses of the world can be artistically glorious and highly collectible."--Bookseller site. Chipping, rubbing and creased and bumped corners. Leaves chipped and toned, otherwise tight, bright, and unmarred. Oblong, tall. 240pp. Thick, large folio black-brown cloth binder with yellow titles with four holes at the side with shoelaces to hold it together.
