1920 · Bismarck, North Dakota
Bismarck, North Dakota: North Dakota Department of Public Health, 1920. Very good. Toned with some rust staining from staples, minor dust soiling.. An emotionally charged public health pamphlet on venereal disease in young girls, published by the government for residents of North Dakota following the First World War. Takes a strong moral stance against "prostitution and immorality", and links syphilis to twelve percent of "all the inmates of the State Hospital for Insane" as a means of conveying the seriousness of the issue. Provides ten brief case studies highlighting the moral crisis facing youth in North Dakota. Auto rides, social dances, and a lack of parental oversight appear to be the biggest risk factors according to this pamphlet. Note the image of an innocent girl in a bonnet used for the title page, and the metaphor of "Moloch", an ancient fire god who required child sacrifices.
