1891 · Lowell, Massachusetts
Lowell, Massachusetts: C.I. Hood & Co, 1891. Very good. Wrappers chipped, a couple short tears, modern pink coloring to a couple of the images.. Featuring an illustration of a pretty young lady on the front, "Lovely Woman" was published as a marketing tool by the makers of Hood's Sarsaparilla, targeting women and homemakers in search of family medicines and remedies. Promotes Hood products for curing everything from "nervousness" in women to dyspepsia, alongside charming stories, illustrations, and anecdotes. Sentimentality abounds, such as in this section on page 5 titled "Very Heavy": "Of all heavy bodies, the heaviest is that of the woman we have ceased to love. N.B. Be sure to get Hood's Sarsaparilla." (p.7). Interesting from a gender studies point of view, as well as for those interesting in the history of advertising. Note the advert for the upcoming 1891 Hood calendar on the lower wrapper. Single vol. (6" by 5.25"), pp. 16, original illus. wrps.
