1927
D. Jacomet's Artistic Press, 1927. Portfolio. Near Fine. Leon Bakst. (13) hand-colored Leon Bakst (1866-1924) “photo-types”, executed in 1927 at D. Jacomet’s Artistic Press. These are offset lithographs, 9 are signed/dated in the plate, all with watercolor/pochoir, heightened with gold and/or silver. Bakst, born a Russian Jew in 1866, was a painter who worked in the theater as a stage and costume designer. He was a member of the Diaghilev circle and created scenery and costumes for Ballet Russes productions, overseeing design as their first artistic director during their heyday (1909-1914). His vibrant designs were a great influence on early 20th century art, revolutionizing fashion and stage design. He was also a founder with Serge Diaghilev and Alexander Benois of the avant-garde magazine Mir Iskusstva (World of Art). A teacher of Marc Chagall, Bakst was also a favorite of the Art Deco era and created many decorative works to grace the homes of high society collectors. These designs are drawn from a collection gathered after Bakst’s death in 1924 and published in several deluxe editions. This selection is exquisitely detailed and ready for framing. Each print measures 10" wide x 13" tall and is in crisp, very sharp condition, with exceptionally vivid hues.
