First edition, first issue, in the correct, first issue mustard, buff-colored cloth (second issue is canary yellow). Octavo (7 3/8 x 4 3/4 inches; 186 x 120 mm). [vi], 208, [2] pp.
Original buff, mustard cloth binding variant. Front cover and spine stamped and lettered in blue. Top edge blue. Blue top edge with some spotting. In original dust jacket, not price clipped. Some very minor chipping to head and tail of jacket spine. Book is about fine, jacket is very good to about fine.
"In this episodic work, Steinbeck returns to the style of Tortilla Flat (1935) to produce a rambling account of the adventures and misadventures of workers in a California cannery and their friends. One character, Doc, was reportedly modeled on the marine biologist Edward F. Ricketts (1896-1948), with whom Steinbeck collaborated on The Sea of Cortez (1941). The character reappears in the sequel, Sweet Thursday (1954)." (Benét's Reader's Encyclopedia, 167).
