Original red cloth with vellum paper backstrip, ruled and lettered in gilt. A few marks to the cloth, front hinge cracked; good. ยง Tacoma edition (i.e. second). A novelized memoir of travels in the Pacific Northwest by Connecticut-born writer and abolitionist Theodore Winthrop. First published in 1863, this new illustrated edition included Winthrop's Western letters and journals and is the best edition according to Howe. Winthrop was the first Union officer to be killed in the Civil War. His novels were published posthumously. The Winthrop Glacier on Mount Rainer was named for him in recognition of the popularity and influence of this book. Includes a vocabulary of the Chinook Jargon. Howes W-584.
