Founded in 1732 by the French, Vincennes, county seat of Knox County, is the oldest continually inhabited European settlement in Indiana, and was the first capitol of the Indiana Territory. Its population in 1870 was 5,440. The Cairo & Vincennes Railroad was chartered in Illinois in 1867 by Civil War General Green B. Raum. The railroad began laying track in 1870, and was fully completed in 1874. Established to move coal from the Illinois mines, one of its first Presidents was the Civil War General Ambrose Burnside. It was reorganized as the C & V Railway, not railroad, in 1880, confirming the date this map was drawn. From a massive collection of recently acquired rairoadiana, including thousands of original railroad company maps..
