1975 · London
by Doyle, Arthur Conan; Ashby, Robert Howe
London: A&W Visual Library, 1975. Fine in near fine slipcase.. Two-volume slipcased facsimile editions of the first two collections of Sherlock Holmes short stories, with the original illustrations by Sidney Paget. While Doyle had published two short novels starring Holmes and Watson in 1887 and 1890, it was not until he adapted the mysteries of the duo into short story format for the STRAND magazine that the series exploded. Beginning with Holmes's failure to catch the magnetic Irene Adler in "A Scandal in Bohemia" and ending with his dramatic disappearance while fighting Moriarty over the Reichenbach Falls in "The Final Problem," these two collections include the majority of the most beloved and iconic scenes in the Sherlockian canon, and make up two thirds of Doyle's own list of favorite Holmes stories. Unabridged facsimiles of the first editions are presented here with the addition of two new introductions by Robert Howe Ashby. 9'' x 6''. Original pictorial wrappers. 317, [1] pages and 279, [1] pages. In original slipcase. Though no provenance markings, this copy from the library of noted Sherlockian, BSI member since 1973, and retired US magistrate judge Andrew Peck. Minor wear to wrappers, faint sunning to spines. Light scuffing to slipcase at extremities.
