First edition, 8vo (8" x 5¾"), pp. [6], 85, [1]; illustrated throughout with black and white sketches; original pink cloth-backed pictorial boards; boards and endpapers with some worming and minor loss, spine worn, binding shaken, first gathering loose; a good, clean copy. "Tung Chia" is a pseudonym for J. O. P. Bland (John Otway Percy Bland). This was his first book. He worked for Chinese Customs from 1883-1896 serving as Sir Robert Hart's private secretary. This is a book of light verse about life among the foreign expatriate communities in Chinese treaty ports. In 1896, he took (truncated) the position of Assistant Secretary to the Shanghai Municipal Council. (Inventory #: 67480)
