Auction catalogue of 1346 lots, principally of 17th - 19th century English book, which represent a typical gentleman's library of the period. Bromley (1813-1866) was a distinguished civil servant who administrative skills and accounting abilities were extremely useful during the expansion of government bureaucracy during the mid-Victorian period of English history. He was involved in accounting for government expenditures during the Irish famine; he reformed procedures for auditing public accounts at the Exchequer saving the government millions of pounds; and later in his career was made head of special committees that analyzed various branches of government. For his contributions he received a K.C.B.
His collection of books reflects his interest in government, monetary policy, and the civil service. The Parliamentary Reports include nearly 100 documents covering such subjects as income and expenditures of public funds, rules governing the civil service, navy and dockyard reports, expenditures of the Navy and the Admiralty, numerous documents on conditions in Ireland, the British Museum Report of 1860, and reports on the War Office, to name a few. The remainder of the collection focuses on English history, topography, and antiquarian studies.
