first edition Wraps. String in stab binding
1890 · Saratoga Springs, New York
Saratoga Springs, New York: Engraved and printed by The Herald Press and Advertising Agency, Montreal and Toronto, 1890. First Edition. Wraps. String in stab binding. Very Good. N.d., but surely 1890, when the mansion was built, as this is surely the original prospectus and sales promotion for the luxurious house, which had hot and cold running water on all floors, electric wiring throughout, the most modern plumbing available, etc. -- features that had as yet not become standard in residential new construction. Oblong, 16 by 18.5 cm. 30 pp. The mansion stands proud to this day, one of the fine homes of Saratoga Springs, on Union Avenue, which retains its status as one of the most prestigious addresses in the Upstate New York resort city famous for its racetrack and the horsey set that descend upon it in August during its three week racing season. Stylistically the house is an eclectic hybrid, with elements of what was known as Italianate, Second French Empire and Greek Revival one could point to. Whatever their historic origin, though, features that are most likely to impress and enchant are the sweeping verandah, running the whole front of the house, and jutting out at one end to form a porte-cochere, the two sets of columns, one set, supporting the verandah, and a taller, two story grouping that bows in front of the verandah, and then, the generous proportions of so many of the rooms.
