[Photo Album] [Travel] Early 20th century 1930s-40s, international travel photo album composed by an American man named Jake who seems to work as a ship crewman and his travels with friends. 44 leaves containing 218 silver gelatin photographs and postcards mounted or cornered in and one sketch of a native African man. Album is 10.25" x 13", string-bound black cloth. Travel album featuring images from around the world, compiled by someone who appears to be the staff on a merchant ship. Locations include Beira in Mozambique, Dondo in Angola, Durban and Cape Town in South Africa, Accra in Gold Coast, Vera Cruz in Mexico, Galveston in Texas, New York, Boston, Mexico City, the Panama Canal, Powell River and Vancouver. Many include photos of and with locals, four real photo postcards captioned "Typical Ricksha Boy" showcases a few young men and teen boys dressed in traditional South African attire, adorned with colorful feathered and horned headdresses, and heavily patterned outfits. Some are posed in front of rickshaws, a means for the men to make a profit on tourist local travel. A few photographs from Accra show some local women in traditional wraps perfectly balancing woven baskets and trays of food on their heads. Another photo captioned "Sam and his 'girls' " shows what appears to be a post card of an African man seated in the middle of women in work uniforms printed with "Sea View Hotel", of which he may be the owner of. Some other photographs show the traveling men on ships and canoes with the locals, one photograph shows the local African men canoeing the group to shore. One photograph shows one of the men laughing with a group of young African girls as they cool down from the heat, captioned "me and my gals." Many photos show the South African locals in their hand built canoes which have accompanying large scale copies. A few photographs are taken in New York and Boston, two images in Boston show the album owner in boat crew gear as he wears thigh high boot wraps, rubber gloves, and an oxygen mask, captioned "At last -- working for a change." 19 photographs are dedicated to Mexico in Mexico City and Vera Cruz. Photographs show Mexican rancheros and rancheras dressed in heavily embroidered sombreros, dresses, and boleros. The traveling men are shown wearing traditional sombreros and sarapes. One page is dedicated to bull fighting. Many pages are dedicated to the ship S.S. Nemiskam Park, and the crew. Some corners coming a bit loose, leaves and photographs are crisp and clean, overall very good condition.
