first edition Hardcover
1930 · New York
by POWELL, Dawn
New York: Farrar and Rinehart, 1930. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Bump on the foredge and a little soiling on the boards, else near fine in near fine black and green dust jacket with a small chip at the top of the front panel (note: we've also seen both a black and orange variant of the jacket, as well as a black and green variant, with no established priority). A very pleasing copy of the author's exceptionally uncommon fourth book, and considered the finest of her "Ohio" novels. Powell was a prolific and well-regarded author, but mostly forgotten until a well-deserved revival was prompted by a 1987 reassessment by Gore Vidal in *The New York Review of Books*. For forty years she was a valued jewel of the New York literary world and if you read her books it's easy to see why. Ernest Hemingway once referred to her as his "favorite living novelist". At the time of her death all of her books were out of print, now almost all are back in print, including two collections of her novels published by the Library of America. This particular title is exceptionally scarce in jacket, and is one of the two nicest copies we've seen. (Inventory #: 586254)
