by Aiken, Joan
London: Jonathan Cape, British Broadcasting Corporation, etc., 2011. First editions, UK or American according to precedence, plus some first American editions, as noted. Variously illustrated by Pat Marriott, Quentin Blake, and others. 109 vols. 8vo. Original publisher’s bindings, illustrated dust jackets when called for. Often with ownership signature of John Clute, and Hand Clute bookplate by Judith Clute. Generally very good to fine. First editions, UK or American according to precedence, plus some first American editions, as noted. Variously illustrated by Pat Marriott, Quentin Blake, and others. 109 vols. 8vo. Comprehensive collection of the Joan (truncated) Aiken (1924-2004), daughter of Conrad Aiken, and the highly esteemed and prolific author of fantasy for children and Young Adult readers. “Almost none of her many adult novels contain explicit fantasy content, though some have supernatural implications … Aiken was never strongly drawn to the writing of sf, though her most famous sequence, beginning with The Wolves of Willoughby Chase (1962) and ending with The Witch of Clatteringshaws (2005), is set in a genuine Alternate History version of Britain where the Stuart dynasty has survived (James III has acceded in 1832), though Hanoverian plots against the throne abound (directly reversing the historical record). A channel tunnel, which allows wolves into England, has been constructed. As in the works of E Nesbit, parents and other authority figures are often absent or lost, underlying the sometime terrifying arbitrariness of her world” — John Clute, The Enclyclopedia of Science Fiction (SFE).
This collection includes her most beloved titles, with signed copies of both London and New York editions of The Wolves of Willoughby Chase, and 14 additional titles signed, among them 4 inscribed books (her last book inscribed to Clute, “I hope it finds you”), together with a typed letter, signed, 7 May 2002, reading in part: “I tried on the whole to keep the supernatural out of my adult books. Except for The Haunting of Lamb House, The narrator of Eliza's Daughter has an odd hand which sometimes solves problems; that's about all. Voices and The Shadow Guests would not count as adult fiction”. An alphabetical list follows (further details available).
