Peterson formed a trio in 1951 with Brown and guitarist Barney Kessel. Herb Ellis replaced Kessel in 1953, forming a notable trio would play together for the next five years, until 1958—a group that jazz historian Scott Yanow would later refer to as one of the greatest ... trios in jazz history."
The unit also served as the "virtual house rhythm section" for Norman Granz's Verve Records, supporting the likes of tenor saxophonists Ben Webster and Stan Getz, as well as trumpeters Dizzy (truncated)
