1787 · New Bedford, Bristol County, Mass
by Haydon, Rhoda (embroiderer)
New Bedford, Bristol County, Mass, 1787. Very good. Hand spun and hand woven linen embroidered with silk thread (278 x 255 mm / 11" x 10"). Excellent state of preservation (small hole inside the letter "o" in Haydon). EARLY AMERICAN EMBROIDERED SAMPLERS DOCUMENT THE EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT OF GIRLS, WHO AT THAT TIME HAD FEW OPPORTUNITIES TO ATTEND SCHOOLS.
This is an extremely well preserved 18th-century "Alphabet Sampler" created by a New England girl who is fully documented in historical records: Rhoda Haydon of New Bedford, Mass. As we learn from the present sampler, she was born on Nov. 4, 1777. Her parents were Capt. William and Susanna (truncated)
