Canada West formerly Upper Canada

Philadelphia: Carey and Hart, 1845. unbound. Map. Engraving with original hand coloring. Image measures 11.5" x 15". This antique 1845 map of Ontario, Canada depicts the province in its entirety. The map was issued by Tanner and is copyrighted by Carey and Hart. Centered on Toronto the map shows "Canada West" which was previously known as "Upper Canada" in great detail. An inset of the northwest portion of the province is included in the lower right quadrant and is centered on Lake Superior. Color coded by district, mountains, lakes, rivers, and other topographical features are noted throughout. Wilberforce Tract is noted. According to Ontario heritage (truncated) trust; "In 1829, a group of free Blacks from Cincinnati, Ohio set out for Biddulph Township in Upper Canada with a bold vision: to establish an organized colony where they could enjoy freedom, self-determination and equality. They were joined by African Americans from New York, Massachusetts, Maryland and other places. Settlers purchased 323 hectares (800 acres) of land from the Canada Company, aided by a group of Ohio Quakers, and named it after British abolitionist William Wilberforce." In good condition. A year after the publication of this map, Mitchell would acquire the map plates of Tanner's Universal Atlas from its publisher Carey and Hart. A distinguishing feature of this map is the distinctive border which features a narrow vine border, referred to by Rumsey as the "Carey and Hart borders". Mitchell subsequently replaced these borders with the traditional strap work border distinctive to Mitchell. Henry Schenck Tanner (1786-2858) was an American cartographer and statistical geographer. Born in New York, he moved to Philadelphia where he established his well-known publishing company with his brother. Tanner was the first American to publish a map of Texas, which subsequently went through eight editions. However, he is best known and most renowned for his New American Atlas. This fine map is a good example of his work. (Inventory #: 321863)
