World War I Photo Album Starting with a Trip Across the US and on to War Torn Europe in 1915

[WWI] [Military] Photo album featuring about 101 photographs from WWI spanning from San Francisco to Washington DC and throughout Europe, all from around 1915. All photos measure between 4.5" x 6.5" and 3" x 2" and are a mix of Albumen, silver gelatin and sepia-toned photographs. Most photos feature captions written in white, including one of several vehicles from 1915 and a group of men and women reading "Automobile Camping Trip San Francisco to Washington DC" and "Approx. 4,000 miles in 27 days" with some of the vehicles being turned into beds with the seats down and the sheets draped over them. Other captions are in French and feature various members (truncated) of a family, including one albumen photograph of two young girls with French bobs reading "Suzane et Jeane Vincent 'a leur grand ami." Other silver gelatin group shots are labeled the "Cateret Family" and feature picnics, trips cars, sitting by various bodies of water, and in gardens. More macabre images from the war are also included, including a devastating scene of bodies in a trench labeled "After a Yank barrage, 1800 Boches deads near Soissons." Another is labeled "Bombarded house, Grandpre, 1917." with smoke still rising from the rubble of a brick house. Other photos are of the Belleau Woods featuring German soldiers, an exploding shell and a cemetery. Action shots of the war are also abundant, including wrecked airplanes, British tanks in disguise, German artillery, German Observation balloons, and German anti-aircraft guns. There are also photos labeled "German Flame Throwers," and a photo of Paul von Hindenburg pointing at a soldier. Other photos feature supply stations in France in 1918, English tanks, captured German guns, and various images of soldiers in large and small groups. Additional portraits of children and family members are featured in the back of the album, showing a sharp contrast between the atrocities of war and the loving home life many soldiers returned to. Binding of album is still tight, with minor wear around the edges. All photos are in very good condition. (Inventory #: 20065)
