Formed in 1991 by keyboardist John Medeski, drummer Billy Martin, and bassist Chris Wood, Medeski Martin and Wood developed their own unique brand of improvisational jazz fusion, incorporating influences as varied as hip hop, funk, and jam band, in a style sometimes described as "avant-groove."
