by Black Troops, Korea
[African American Soldiers] Photo archive of 24 photos African American soldiers in the 1960s in Korea and Europe. Original Black and white silver gelatin photographs primarily measuring 4" x 3". Circa 1960s. At least half of the photos appear to be from Korea, based out of Camp Kaiser and the surrounding area, which was a military compound of low cinder block buildings and Quonset huts some 60 miles north of Seoul and about 30 miles from the North Korean artillery arrayed along their side of the Demilitarized Zone. Eight of the photos are captioned, ex: "Camp Kaiser", "Korean Home", "Village", "CO Area". Two photos show a European street during a parade, where a parade float of a jet titled "General Knuller" is proceeding through a crowd. It is taken from an apartment window on a cross street and appears to be set in an Alpine German speaking area. A few photos depict soldiers standing through the sunroof of a circa 1960 Volkswagen Beetle watching the parade. Another photo of the town shows its fire engines with hoses deployed amid a crowd that has amassed. Another photo depicts an African American soldier standing in front of a wooden sign in the shape of a bull in on a plain in front of an industrial valley. We see a chrome fighter jet on the tarmac of an airstrip surrounded by Air Force personnel as well as the wings of a few other planes including a biplane in the foreground. One interesting photo shows an African American soldier outside a Jewish temple with a Star of David on the front wall and a few planted flags, one which has "Troop Att 1964" sewn in along the edge. Another photo shows an overhead view of Camp Kaiser, with its sprawling Quonset huts on a plain 60 miles outside of Seoul and about 30 miles from the North Korean line at the Demilitarized Zone, circa 1960s. Another Korean scene is of an African American soldier leaning against a tank nicknamed "Kimchee" and one of its crewmen standing through the hatch. Several photos depict the primarily Black troops trekking and camping out in the "Cold+Wet" environs that could be either Korea or the European Alps. An intriguing photo archive that depicts African American soldiers in both Europe and Asia during the height of the Cold War. In very good condition overall.
