by [Goya, Francisco] Sayre, Eleanor
New York: Walker, in association with the Department of Printing and Graphic Art, Harvard College Library, 1971. Copy 73 of 125 copies published in their first and only edition (150 total, including copies I-XXV containing a double suite of the 6 etchings). The book: Frontispiece & 32 illustrations on 31 plates. + 46 pp. (including 12 figures). One-quarter warm tan morocco and marbled paper boards. Gilt titling on spine. 29 x 20 cm. PLUS 6 original etchings loose in folding case bound in matching marbled paper. Both housed in similar tan 1/4-morocco & light-brown cloth clamshell case with gilt titling on spine. The three double-sided copper plates from which the plates were printed passed from Goya's grandson Mariano to John Savile Lumley, then to Colnaghi, from whom Philip Hofer acquired them in the 1930s. He, in turn, gave them in 1970 to the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, after the present edition of 150 sets had been printed. The Museum's policies absolutely prohibit any further edition. The few proofs pulled by earlier owners are scrupulously described in Eleanor Sayre's superb catalogue. Very fine.
