[Rosove 1236, Spence 883]. Russell Owen [1889-1952] was a journalist and writer interested in adventure and exploration. He covered the air race to the North Pole with Amundsen and was part of Byrd's Little America I Antarctic expedition of 1928-30, and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the onsite reporting of the expedition. He also wrote a book about the expedition in 1934, "South of the Sun". This book is a good overview of Antarctic exploration from the late 1700's to early 1800's with Cook, Palmer, Wilkes to the Golden or "Heroic" Age of Antarctic exploration with European and British explorers.
