signed
by FOX, William (1879-1952)
This important Hungarian-born American film executive founded the Fox Film Corporation in 1915, which morphed eventually into 20th Century-Fox, and also owned a large movie theater chain in the 1920s; all came crashing down in the 1930s with bankruptcy, imprisonment on bribery and perjury charges, presidential pardon from Harry Truman, neglect and oblivion. TNS, 1p, 5½" X 7½", New York, NY, 31 January 1928. Addressed to C.F. Zittel. Near fine. On imprinted "Library / William Fox" letterhead, Fox writes, "Attached find pass #A46 for admittance to William Fox Theatres. I trust this will afford you many happy moments...." Boldly signed in blue ink. Zittel (1877-1943) was a writer and owner of a theatrical weekly popular among vaudevillians, so Fox sending him a pass to his movie theaters was surely good for business. A rather scarce autograph of this pivotal figure. (Inventory #: 49682)
