by Dibble, Sheldon
Lahainaluna: Press of the Mission Seminary, 1843. First edition. 12mo. viii, 464 pp. Contemporary half Russia; boards rubbed; mild to moderate old staining. With the four copper engraved views, printed at Lahainaluna, present, but without the map (which was not considered part of the book by the author or publisher "early copies ... may lack it" Forbes; a torn piece of it is tipped to the back pastedown endpaper). With the Honolulu (revised) printing of the appendix. "The first full-scale history printed in the Islands ... one of the most important documents of its time". The plates (and their sizes) are as follows:
1.Bay of Kealakekua (8.1 x 15.1 cm),
2.Lahaina as seen from Lahainaluna 8.2 x 15 cm
3.Lahainaluna (8.3x 15 cm)
4.Wailuku (6 x 15.2 cm)
Forbes estimates that about 200 sets of the engravings were printed. These, he says, were completed after the work was published and partially distributed, and are thus only occasionally present. Hill finds them "very rare". 600 copies of the main text (100 bound in Boston) and 400 copies of the revised appendix were printed. Forbes 1383; Hill 476. (Inventory #: 33102)
