Fourth edition "with many additions," 8vo, pp. [16], 706, [2]; text in double column; ink splash on the penultimate leaf obscuring several words, the verso of the last leaf with manuscript annotations in at least 2 hands; a very good, sound copy in contemporary paneled calf, red sprinkled edges; neatly rebacked to match, new red morocco label on spine. First published in 1656, this work, which brought Blount nothing but his own satisfaction, was revised and enlarged by William Nelson in 1717 and adopted by Edward Philips in his New World of English Words published a year later. Starnes & Noyes, p. 46: "Blount is the first lexicographer of a purely English dictionary to attempt an etymology of words." He is also the first English lexicographer to cite authorities consulted.
