by [Carroll, Lewis]; Delafield, Emily Prime; [Goodhue, Bertram]
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company, 1898. Near fine.. First printing of this beautiful adaptation of Lewis Carroll's classic, with illustrations inspired by early modern woodblocks — a scarce Goodhue work in exceptional condition. With woodcut illustrations that look like an incunable had a brief but inspiring friendship with Aubrey Beardsley, ALICE IN WONDERLAND is an attractive example of Bertram Godhue's Arts and Crafts sensibilities in book form. His bright, bold aesthetic is a perfect match for Emily Prime Delafield's interpretation of ALICE, which was first presented for The Society of Decorative Art with a cast of children. This is a very nice copy, rarely found so. 8'' x 5''. Original color pictorial boards. Red and yellow pictorial endpapers of Alice characters including the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee. Illustrated in black and red. 90 pages. Binding with light toning to spine, mild edgewear; one tiny spot of soil to title. Leaves with occasional faint finger soil. Bright.
