by Grondahl, Joseph LL.B., Ph.B.
New York City [NY]: The Safety First League, 1924. Cloth. Good. 236, [2] (index) pages + frontis. 11 1/2 x 13 3/8 inches (oblong). Publisher's red cloth gilt. This copy INSCRIBED boldly by the author "Union City New Jersey Oct 29, 1925. To National Automobile Service Corporation. Yours sincerely Joseph Grondahl Author" on front pastedown. This copy has been read well, but has held up nicely. Cloth. A fascinating view into what was though important to teach in automobile safety in 1924. Over 50 full page plates reproducing photographs showing actual street scenes (many in NY City) which illustrate not only what street level scenes looked like at the time, but also each plate notes the cautionary approach drivers should use. It has a bit of everything - theory of approach, practical issues (avoiding sliding on metal rails in the rain), where and how to pass in many situations, "It is better to strike the holes and lose a spring - than to strike another car and lose your life - do not be a hole-dodger at the jeopardy of others - signal - slow down and cross - or stop until road is clear then turn out cautiosly and proceed". The text is dense and extensive - but the images summarize much of the content for those with that learning method.
Many many lessons to be learned here, and nearly all apply today! The images of early cars present in each plate are great.
Surprisingly under-represented in institutional collections with less than a dozen found as of this writing. (Inventory #: 29128)
