In search of adventure, he traveled west to the Rockies where he remained for several years, participating in the fur trade and encountering many well-known traders, explorers, trappers, and mountain men -- including Jim Bridger, Thomas Fitzpatrick, Benjamin Boneville, and French-Canadian Cree hunter Antoine (truncated) Clement, with whom Stewart maintained a same-sex relationship over the course of a decade.
