Portland, ME, 1851. Signed William Pitt Fessenden letter from his law firm, Fessenden & Deblois.
Fessenden was born in New Hampshire in 1806 but would spend most of his life in Maine. He was a lawyer, Representative, Senator, and later the United States Secretary of the Treasury under Lincoln during the Civil War. Fessenden was vehemently against Slavery and helped start an Anti-Slavery Coalition while in the Maine State Legislature.
The letter itself is in good condition. On line 5 of the letter there is a section crossed out in ink with a correction above it. Stampless letter with address on back. Tear in the upper right (truncated)
