An article on mind-altering substances including alcohol, opium, LSD, and "tranquilizers" (for which Huxley notes that American doctors wrote 47,000,000 prescriptions in 1957). First published in *The Saturday Evening Post*, October 18, 1958. This essay would be included in several collections of Huxley's essays, but we note only one copy of this Curtis Publishing offprint (Curtis published *The Saturday Evening Post*), at SUNY Geneseo.
