London: Robert Triphook and Thomas Rodd, 1822. First Thomas Taylor tranlation.. Finely bound in full dark green crushed moroccco, circa 1900, ornately gilt floral borders on both covers and spine heavily gilt in six compartments. Ornate gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers. A.E.G. The binding is signed "Thierry. sr.(successor) to Petit Simier". With two engraved bookplates, of Thomas Fleming, Jr. (d.1908) and Richard Phillip Hart Durkee (d.1931). Hinges a bit rubbed, but a very attractive copy. 8vo. xxiv, 400, (10)pp. With the half-title. This copy is "extra-illustrated" with 8 plates, some a bit erotic.
The first English translation by Thomas Taylor. Note: The final leaves are the "Passages Suppressed", not found in all copies. Oddly, p.4, p.5 and p.9 and p.10 are blank. Nevertheless it is complete as published, collated against the digital copy on-line at the Warburg Institute. There is another edition which reproduces the 1822 title-page, with pagination of xix, 213pp., but this is an 1893 reprint. (Inventory #: 9867)
