World War I Newspaper Show English Girls Fire Fighters Training for Air Raids, 1916

[World War I] Excelsior, La Guerre Illustree. 1916. in French. Measures 14" x 10.5" inches. French newspaper reports on British girls learning fire fighting tactics to save lives during air raids. Front page of paper shows photographs of prisoners being led by soldiers. Back page shows young girls practicing lifesaving skills for air raids. In one image they help each other down a ladder, in another one carries the other across her shoulders in a fireman's carry. In a dramatic shot a girl jumps from a second story window with a group of others waiting below holding a wide piece of thick fabric to catch her. 1916 was a turning point in World War I when (truncated) Allied economies were mobilized to ramp up military power so that soldiers could break the deadlock on the western front. Citizens were active participants in the war effort both economically and by training as volunteers in domestic war efforts. Some light toning does not affect text or images. Overall good condition.
