1970 Original Photo of Black Panther Party Leader, Huey P. Newton

The Black and white silver gelatin original Press photograph measures 10" x 8.5" inches. In 1967, Huey P. Newton was charged with voluntary manslaugher after shooting a white Oakland policeman. Newton was jailed because of this case off and on until 1971, when he was cleared of all charges, after the initial 1968 conviction was overturned on appeal. Newton's face has lightened up and there are glimpses of joy visible in this photo. Has caption on front of photo and excerpt from newspaper article on back. These (truncated) original press photo taken by photojournalist within tight timeframe for the benefit of particular editorial board and with the aim of usage by the press to illustrate an article often affected public opinion in the nation.
