The Black and white silver gelatin original Press photograph measures 10" x 8.5" inches. In 1967, Huey P. Newton was charged with voluntary manslaugher after shooting a white Oakland policeman. Newton was jailed because of this case off and on until 1971, when he was cleared of all charges, after the initial 1968 conviction was overturned on appeal.
