Has the seal of "Uhuru Umoja", meaning Freedom and Unity in Swahili. The Soul Student Advisory Council was formed by Black Panthers Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale at Merritt in 1966 with the purpose of ending the drafting of black men into the service to fight in the Vietnam War. This organization was a precursor to the Black Panther Party, which was formed later in that year in October.
