National Black Work Conference for a Black University. 1969. Sponsored by Soul Student Advisory Council at Merritt College in Oakland. 11" x 8.5" inches. 4 pages. Has the seal of "Uhuru Umoja", meaning Freedom and Unity in Swahili. The Soul Student Advisory Council was formed by Black Panthers Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale at Merritt in 1966 with the purpose of ending the drafting of black men into the service to fight in the Vietnam War. This organization was a precursor to the Black Panther Party, which was formed later in that year in October. This pamphlet is the official program of events from Friday March 28th to the culminating Kwansa ceremony (truncated) on April 5th, 1969. The program states that the conference was to be dedicated to Huey Newton; the keynote address was to be delivered by Sister Makinya (formerly known as Harriet Smith, the former student body president at Merritt College).
