1884. An ALS from American author Bret Harte to journalist, editor, and government official Charles A. Dana, dated Glasgow, November 28, 1884. Harte was then the American consul in Glasgow, and wrote to ask Dana for a favor: "I am so out of the political world that I don't know who of my old friends would be influential enough with the incoming administration to ask for my continuance in office. To the best of my knowledge I have satisfied my own country, and the one to which I was appointed, but that may not be enough...I can only think of you and Mr Barlow at present as likely or willing to help me...Do this in loyalty to your former kindness to your (truncated)
