In this copy, the watercolor is La fenêtre fleurie, showing a lavish flowering plant encircling the window of a war camp shed.
Renowned illustrator later known for his iconic designs for Air France, Boucher had served in the trenches with the French Army in World War I. These images are testimony to his time as prisoner at the Mersenburg camp in Saxony, along with Mario Mounier, and the publisher, Marcel Seheur. The preface was written by novelist Pierre Mac Orlan.
