[Boston, MA ?], 1862. Broadside. 25 x 20 cm. Blind stamp of Essex Institute in one corner; short split at margin, along an old fold line (not affecting text). An attractive broadside appealing for men to go on a day's notice to support the Union cause. Based on the date, we think it fair to believe that this is an appeal to support former Governor of Massachusetts, now Major-General Nathaniel P. Banks. The Confederate capture of Front Royal on May 23 left Banks isolated and outnumbered, and in full retreat. He escaped across the Potomac at Harpers Ferry, but with considerable losses, especially in prisoners, but nonetheless rescued his army, and returned (truncated) to Washington. A timely call to reinforce Banks who, as governor, prepared a state militia which when called by Banks' successor, Gov. Andrew, were well drilled and well equipped, and which promptly supported the Union in the desperate early months of the war. (Inventory #: 66102)
