Two small areas of tape residue on the front pastedown and a small inked "loaned" note on the rear fly, else fine in a near fine, lightly toned and worn dustwrapper with the author's half-tone portrait on the rear panel.
Inscribed by the author on Jan. 30, 1964: "Many Thanks to James F. Green from Leila M. Barlow." With an Autograph Letter Signed from Barlow to Miss James Frances Greene laid in, in the original envelope, as well as a small promotional card for the book, with one manuscript correction and an additional Signature. The letter, from one "Spelmanite" to another, offers her book for sale.
The author, a native of Americus, Georgia, retired in 1958 as a professor in the English Department at Alabama State College in Montgomery (an HBCU), after 28 years as the department head. Barlow attended Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s church in Montgomery and upon the occasion of her retirement he sent a letter congratulating her on her "great and noble career." He also wrote: "Hundreds and thousands of students have been inspired by your wise and challenging teaching and they have been sent forth into the world to keep the light of truth and goodness shining. As your pastor, I can truly say that it has been a deep joy working with you. By all standards of measurements, you have proven to be one of the most devoted and loyal members of our church (...) Your love for Alabama State and Dexter Avenue Baptist Church will be an inspiration to generations yet unborn." Barlow discusses the effect of Dr. King's teaching on her life and outlook on pp.53-54.
