(Billy) Hayes was the track coach at Indiana University from1924-43, where he won eight Big Ten cross country titles and three NCAA crowns, five Big Ten track titles and the NCAA title in 1932, and coached world record holders and seven Olympians. Indiana University named its track and field Billy Hayes Track in his honor. Vaughn Shoemaker, longtime political cartoonist at the Chicago Daily News, won the 1938 and 1947 Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Cartooning and created the character John Q. Public. The book is Very Good, lacking the dust jacket, rubs at corners. Gift inscription front end page noting "Faculty Club Gift of E. C. Hayes, 1943", the year Hayes died at the age of 59 from pneumonia.
