Tall thick 4tos, contemporary black calf-backed boards with gilt-stamped Scottish coat of arms and ornate designs (scuffing to leather, vol 1 front hinge cracked and closed tear to spine). All edges gilt. London: Ackermann and Co., 1857. An incomplete, but otherwise good copy of this scarce book. The binding was glued rather than sewn, so the individual signatures have sprung. Missing in Vol. I - illuminated (truncated) frontispiece 'The Clans Arms', Mackays (plate & text), Forbese (plate & text), and Morays (plate & text); missing in Vol. II - illuminated frontispiece 'The Clans Arms', Machachlans (plate & text), and Glen Morriston (plate & text), Rose (plate only).
