Striking depiction of the aloe plant in a decorative vessel from the four-volume study of flowers and plants, "Phytanthoza Iconographia" edited by Johann Weinmann between 1737 and 1745. Both accurate and beautiful, these prints were the first botanical color mezzotints, a revolutionary method that allowed for subtlety and detail. Weinmann (1683-1741) was a renowned pharmacist whose plant studies earned him scientific acclaim among botanists. He employed several botanical artists and engravers to assist with the project including (truncated)
