Based on the 1942 novel "The Stranger" by Lillian Bos Ross. Later re-released under the title, "For Better, For Worse." Gene Hackman stars as a rural rancher who sends away for a mail-order bride, looking for an extra ranch hand. His headstrong bride, played by Liv Ullman, is a tough bargain, and the two eventually fall in love through shared hardship and growing respect. An early effort of screenwriter Marc Norman, twenty-five years before he would receive an Oscar for his work on "Shakespeare in Love."
