London: Published for the Artist by David Bogue, [1847]. First edition. Cruikshank's cautionary tale told in pictures of the dangers of drinking -- issued the year he became a teetotaler. This is the six-shilling superior-paper issue which was stitched into wrappers (vs being offered on one large sheet for a single shilling) with the eight plates on heavy "fine paper" with tint block added for shading (vs untinted). Bound by John Bumpus, Oxford St., in folio three-quarter leather over pebbled cloth boards with marbled endpapers and ORIGINAL WRAPS BOUND IN. Armorial bookplate of Sir David Salomons, 1st Baronet, to front endpaper. Salomons was a leading (truncated) figure in the 19th century struggle for Jewish emancipation in the United Kingdom and the first Jewish Sheriff of the City of London and Lord Mayor of London [Wikipedia]. Some soiling to original wraps and foxing to margins of plates but no loss or tears. Covers show some soiling and staining and a bit of skinning to cloth along lower edges of boards.
