by Hall, Robert
Boston: James Loring, 1827. First American edition. 12mo. 264 pp. Contemporary calf (rubbed), gilt stamped red morocco spine label, head of spine worn down to page edges, joints starting, boards bowed. Front endpaper lacking, overall toning to text block. McCoy, Freedom of the Press, H 36 for the London 1793 edition; McCoy 1H39, for the English 1822 edition. Long notes by McCoy under both editions: "This eloquent statement, delivered by a prominent Baptist minister, is a landmark in the development of the idea of press freedom." Shoemaker 29114, numerous institutional copies. It is curious that McCoy did not record this American edition.
