He covered the air race to the North Pole with Amundsen and was part of Byrd's Little America I Antarctic expedition of 1928-30, and was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for the onsite reporting of the expedition. He also wrote a book about the expedition in 1934, "South of the Sun".

This book is a good overview of Antarctic exploration from the late 1700's to early 1900's with Cook, Palmer, Wilkes to the Golden or "Heroic" Age of Antarctic exploration with European and British explorers. (Inventory #: 11708)
